How is wastewater analysis effective for addressing COVID-19 outbreaks?
Research has shown that wastewater analysis is an effective way to rapidly identify viral outbreaks on the community scale. By continuously monitoring concentrations of the virus in wastewater, communities can act to contain outbreaks when concentrations rise above a baseline level.
When necessary, the location of an outbreak can be further isolated to neighbourhoods or individual streets by taking water samples at access points.
This consortium of municipalities, treatment facilities and other organizations are working together to develop Ontario’s capacity to monitor for SARS-COV2.
